ONGOING work to 'upgrade' a pedestrian crossing in Christchurch will be suspended this week.

Dorset County Council said "due to unforeseen circumstances" the work by Domino's Pizza on the A35 Barrack Road, due to continue today, would be postponed until Monday, May 21.

The council said the £65,000 project will still be completed on schedule.

The traffic lights, poles, cabling and detector equipment are all being replaced, using low voltage LED lights to reduce energy costs.

The council says: "Up-to-date vehicle and pedestrian detection will make the crossing safer for pedestrians while minimising delays for motorists."

There are temporary traffic lights in use while the work is under way, which is expected to be completed by June 22.
