MORE than 150 cub scouts lit candles, sang campfire songs and enjoyed a birthday cake at an event marking the institution's centenary on Friday night.

The celebration on Christchurch Quay was attended by cubs from each of the town's eight 'packs', who also received glow sticks to create a festive atmosphere.

As well as a rendition of traditional spiritual Kumbaya, the cubs sang Happy Birthday and renewed their scouting promises.

District commissioner Brett Jones said: "We had a great time. Scouting is a very positive thing for young people and it is growing as a movement.

"We are getting more and more young people interested.

"It has moved on a long way since Baden-Powell set up the first camp on Brownsea Island in 1907, but it has stuck to its core values: outdoor adventure, friendship, team building and community."

The cubs are seeking adult volunteers to help lead activities. Contact Mr Jones on dc@christchurchscouts.org.uk.
