ARTS and antiques markets in Christchurch are not likely to be held next year due to the 'lack of success'.

A report to the council says the markets are not doing as well this year as previously, with income significantly down.

The markets, held once a month on a Sunday, are run by SMT Management Consultants, on a trial basis.

Last year the group received complaints from food establishments in the town, concerned about the number of food and drink stalls trading in the antique and arts market.

They claimed it was noticeably affecting their income.

It was agreed the market would not have food and drink stalls, and the organisers promised to adhere to the arts and antique stipulations.

This year, bad weather has affected the Sunday Markets, with two days cancelled.

A report to the policy and resources committee, which meets next Wednesday, said many of the traders are more used to trading inside at craft fayres, failing to attend unless the weather was perfect.

The total income for 2015 was £2,780, with an expenditure of £325 for the street closure order.

This year, they have made £1,310, with the November figures still to come.

"This reduced income reflects the difficulties in getting art and antique traders regularly trade at Sunday market, particularly when other competing craft fayres are inviting them to their events", the report adds.

"It now seems unlikely that SMT will organise art and antique markets in 2017."

The council are being advised to "disassociate" themselves from the scheme completely in 2017, in line with the move toward council staff withdrawing from organising public events in the borough.

If there was to be an application to close the High Street, the council would still have control over a decision under the licensing scheme.

The meeting will discuss the issue on Wednesday at the Civic Offices.
