PLANS to erect a fence around a popular play area on Christchurch Quay are set to go before councillors next week.

The play facility on the Quomps, which is next to the Splashpark, was completely refurbished this year.

But now, following a risk assessment which said a fence was needed as a safety measure against dogs, unauthorised visitors and the proximity to the river, councillors are due to consider installing one.

The idea is supported by Christchurch Citizens Association, who wrote to the council supporting the plans for a fence.

Cllr Bernie Davis, portfolio holder for community previously said they were considering increasing the warden patrols in a bid to tackle the dog fouling issue at the park.

A report to the policy and resources committee says that for many years a perimeter fence wasn't acceptable to the Environment Agency as the site is on a floodplain.

However, recently, the organisation has indicated that subject to the type of fencing, they would now reconsider.

The report says there has been "overwhelming" public support for the works, with around 100 people considering it vital that a boundary fence was constructed.

They raised concerns about the proximity of the site to open water, the risk of uncontrolled dogs and dogs fouling, and the risk of unauthorised access.

There have also been a small number of comments from people fearing a fence would spoil the open aspect of the beauty spot.

Officers suggest the fence is built with space for a picnic area within the play park.

It is likely to be made from black metal railings, and could cost up to £10,000.

The report also says it could "inevitably trap litter blowing across the site and debris during periods of flooding."

Members of the committee will be asked to approve the construction of the fence.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday evening.
