ANOTHER heated debate about litter facilities in Christchurch has broken out.

Residents launched a tirade about overflowing bins at the Quay and the High Street where supercars and classic cars were on display.

Bins for dog waste were piled high with take-away packaging, while rubbish bins were packed with bottles and cans, seen flowing onto the pavement.

The latest comments follow news when Christchurch Rowing Club hit back over littering accusations in March, after the council decided to remove bins from the Quay as part of a controversial trial.

Christchurch Borough Council has been criticised for failing to provide enough bins to cater for large town-wide events.

But a council spokesman said it is the responsibility of individual event organisers to ensure litter is cleared and, when an officer examined the site the following morning (MAY 16), it was clear of any litter.

Resident Rosy Wells was enjoying Sunday's events when she was taken aback by the amount of rubbish lining the streets at lunchtime.

She said: "By 2pm all the inadequate number of rubbish bins [were] full to overflowing and despite the council suggesting that everyone should take their bottles and chip wrappers home, in reality I saw very little evidence of lads carrying bags to put their detritus in and frankly who can blame them?

"In their excitement at the prospect of seeing a host of Ferraris, Porsches, etc up close would you expect anyone to remember to bring a bag for their rubbish and then to carry it around?

"Come on Christchurch, just because you allow these events to take place your responsibilities don't end there."

Event visitor Richard Greene added: "This is ridiculous. If the council wants to stop littering they should be installing more bins, not taking them away.

"I see no evidence of people's willingness to dispose of their litter as what few litter bins were available around the priory were bulging with waste, in fact I noticed that even the dog waste disposal bins were being used as a last ditch attempt for people to dispose of their litter."

Supercars Festival organiser, Stuart Tizzard, said he was disappointed to learn of people's complaints as they had worked hard over the weekend to comply with the council's rules on litter.

He said: "We have spent a year planning and gone to unbelievable lengths to address so many issues beforehand, including litter. Our policy was: food stall tables [were] cleared every hour, bin liners replaced every 90 mins, at 4pm litter was professionally removed for the High Street and surrounding areas.

"All council bins were emptied and the roads were swept and cleared at the end of the event [and] throughout the day every available person, including myself, personally picked up litter."
