DEVELOPERS of a rundown Christchurch retail park earmarked for a food store have submitted new plans for six separate shops on the site.

And leading names such as Aldi, TK Maxx and Matalan have been linked with the scheme which could create 156 jobs.

The Meteor Retail Park, off Somerford Road, has permission for a supermarket, with an appeal on Wednesday set to decide on a revision to those plans.

But the latest application from Brookhouse Group for full planning permission is to develop the existing retail park and build a retail warehouse of six units for both food and other uses.

The scheme for the site, which used to include PC World and Allied Carpets, is not proposing an increase in floorspace from what is already permitted.

A planning statement from Savills suggests prospective retailers could include stores such as Matalan, TK Maxx and Sports Direct along with possibly Aldi, Majestic Wines and Bathstore.

But Brookhouse said they were not able to confirm the names of retailers at this stage.

It said: “There is significant clothing and footwear expenditure leakage to areas outside of the borough. Over 90 per cent of residents’ spending on clothing and footwear is spent outside of Christchurch.

“This equates to over £60m in 2014 and results in unsustainable shopping trips.”

The report says Christchurch is currently “not providing” for its residents in terms of clothing and footwear retailers with shoppers mainly using Castlepoint and Bournemouth town centre.

By 2019, Savills predict almost £73million of residents’ spending on clothing and footwear will be outside Christchurch.

Tom Whitehead from Brookhouse said: “The simple reason for the current application is that it’s designed to meet the requirements of a specific supermarket operator.”

In 2008, councillors approved plans for an Aldi supermarket on the Meteor site as well three other retail units.

But the plans for the budget supermarket were delayed due to the tough trading conditions of the recession.

At the time the supermarket said they were still interested in Christchurch as a location.
