A RESIDENTS’ group who took on a failing community centre have been praised for their dedication and commitment.

The trustees of Mudeford Wood Community Centre took on the management of the popular facility in 2012 after a campaign by residents to save it from possible closure.

Christchurch council, in support of the centre, agreed to fund a number of one-off and ongoing projects including £28,000 repairs to outside courts and £22,000 of maintenance works.

Judith Plumley, head of community and leisure, told members of the scrutiny and policy review committee: “There is no doubt they have really entered into the running of the centre with commitment and dedication.

“They have put a lot of time into making a go of the facility.

“They have also taken a very positive outlook with regard to improvements and got funding for new kitchen facilities.”

The committee heard the transfer of responsibility had been a ‘significant success’ largely due to the “enormous enthusiasm, professionalism and commitment of dedicated volunteer trustees.”

Cllr David Jones said: “It has been mentioned it is a success story.

“The absolute total commitment of the community to get this up and running means we can be very proud.”

Cllr Fred Neale added: “This is all down to the trustees and they should be thanked.”

Samantha Staples, who joined the facility as centre co-ordinator last year, said: “We have ramped up the fundraising and events we are holding so we can make further improvements to the centre.

“The centre has not really been touched for 25 years. The money will go towards general maintenance and items such as improved CCTV.

“We’ve set a target of £10,000. This is such a popular centre and footfall is so heavy.

“The report to the committee was very positive and we hope to continue working in this way.”
