A NEW housing development in Christchurch could see up to 44 new homes built as part of an ongoing community project.

Residents on the Somerford estate had the chance to view the plans for the Strete Mount sheltered housing scheme last week.

The plans propose 44 new affordable homes for the estate following the demolition of the current properties.

Around 40 residents from nearby streets came to a consultation event at High Cross Church to view the plans, discuss them with Sovereign representatives and the architects, Christchurch-based Aspire, and give their feedback.

The proposals that were put on display have been approved by a design panel recruited from local residents, which has been involved in developing the plans.

Sovereign is proposing 31 homes for affordable rent and 13 for shared ownership on the old Strete Mount site.

And in a bid to meet a variety of housing needs among the local population, the homes range from one-bedroom maisonettes to three-bedroom houses.

Strete Mount is the third site that Sovereign is developing after Scotts Green welcomed their first residents recently.

Sovereign’s regional director for Dorset, Luke Bingham, said: “We have seen already in Somerford that, ahead of planning, it’s vital to get the support of the local community when building new developments, and to make sure that their concerns are taken into consideration.

“The input of the design panel has been very useful, not only with regard to the look of the new buildings, but also other issues such as parking and access roads. There is a real need to provide a variety of affordable housing options in Christchurch, including low-cost home ownership.”
