BOURNEMOUTH’S North Cemetery has been named as one of the best in Britain.

The cemetery in Charminster is among a record-breaking 1,686 parks and green spaces that yesterday received a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park of green space.

The award, now celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.

It signifies to the public that the awarded space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Bournemouth’s North Cemetery, home to Bournemouth Crematorium, is the latest winner for Bournemouth Borough Council’s parks and bereavement services teams.

The site was particularly commended for its work with Dorset Wildlife Trust on projects including its bat boxes and the horticultural maintenance of the site.

Councillor David Smith, portfolio holder for planning and environment, said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award from Keep Britain Tidy. This is the first one for this site, but brings the total number of Green Flags to 17 across Bournemouth.

“This award recognises and highlights that people in Bournemouth benefit from a green space of the highest quality.”

Some of Bournemouth’s other Green Flag Awards are for Boscombe Chine Gardens, Stour Valley Nature Reserve and Tuckton Tea Gardens.

Linda Barker, bereavement service manager, said: “Having a peaceful and tranquil open space for the bereaved to mourn, reflect and remember is of the utmost importance to our team.

"Having Keep Britain Tidy commending our commitment to the needs of the bereaved in this way is an honour.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager, Paul Todd, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record breaking year for the Green Flag Award Scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the awards.

"All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
