A PUBLIC consultation will be held for a proposed development of more than 35 homes in Bournemouth town centre.

Proposals for eight town houses and 27 apartments at St Stephen's Road car park will go on display at The Norfolk Royale Hotel on Tuesday from 2-8pm.

A further block of apartments on sloping land to the north of the site is also being considered.

Council leaders hope the scheme, previously reported to be worth £10.4 million, will encourage more families to live in the heart of the town.

The project is led by The Bournemouth Development Company - a public private partnership between Bournemouth Borough Council and Morgan Sindall Investments.

Duncan Johnston, director of the BDC, said: “The proposal incorporates sustainability, contemporary design and impressive architecture. It is aimed at attracting families and young professionals keen to live in the town centre.”

The proposal includes three four-bed and five three-bed town houses. The block of 27 apartments will include one, two and three-bed flats.

It is designed to regenerate the 77-space surface car park currently used as weekday parking by council staff.

Cllr John Beesley, leader of Bournemouth Borough Council, said: “By offering a mix of high-quality new homes at this central location, we can continue to support the vibrancy and economy of the area, a central plank of the Town Centre Vision. The development will help to boost further investment in Bournemouth, increase footfall and retail spend, and support local employment during construction.”

The consultation follows planning approval by civic chiefs earlier this year.

A full planning application is expected to be made by the end of this year, with work starting on site in 2016, if approved
