CROWDS gathered for the unveiling of a monument in memory of Red Arrows’ pilot Jon Egging.

The model of the plane flown by Flt Lt Egging, who tragically lost his life in August 2011 shortly before landing after a display at the Bournemouth Air Festival, has been unveiled at the Bournemouth Aviation Museum.

On the same day the Runway Cafe at Bournemouth Flying Club handed over a cheque for £2,300 to the Jon Egging Trust, which was set up in memory of Red 4 to help and support young people "be the best they can be".

Terry Trevett, chairman of the Bournemouth Red Arrows Association, said both events were well supported.

“Both events were extremely successful,” he said.

“There was lots people there. He was a very popular man.”

Vicki Carswell, community fundraiser at the Jon Egging Trust, said the charity has received huge support from people in Bournemouth, which has enabled them to help hundreds of youngsters.

The monument, which is a model of Jon's plane, was unveiled in front of a large crowd at the museum last month.

Miss Carswell said: "It's a fantastic monument and it's a lovely tribute to Jon.

"It is beautiful and anybody who is interested in the aviation should visit the museum. "There is a fantastic collection there."

The Jon Egging Trust creates partnerships and develops opportunities to support young people overcome adversity.

It was set up to realise Red 4's dream of supporting young people to be the best they can be by his wife Dr Emma Egging, his mother Dawn Egging, childhood friend James Godley and Red Arrow’s pilot Ben Plank.

The charity aims to link youngsters with inspirational role models from the worlds of aviation, engineering and science through its Blue Skies Programme, which helps children aged between 13 and 16 years old, and is now established in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Dorset and Anglesey.

This year there are almost 200 students enrolled on Blue Skies programmes across the country.

Miss Carswell said the Trust said the charity was grateful for all the support from people in the region.

She added: "It's really humbling to see the support we get in Bournemouth."
