A GROUP of women hoping to prove the Women’s Institute is up to date have launched a branch for younger women in Bourne-mouth.

Members of Stour Power WI have set out to dispel the stereotypes associated with the traditional community organisation, which next year will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

The group, which has around 15 members so far, held its first official meeting on Friday.

Vice-chairman Jane Cuthbert said Stour Power WI hopes to rekindle traditional home- making skills while also embracing modern interests for the 21st centenary woman.

“We chose the name Stour Power WI because we welcome ladies from across the Stour Valley area,” she said.

“And we believe that women can do amazing things when they work together. Ladies of all ages and all social backgrounds are welcome to chat, share ideas and work together, to have fun and have a laugh.”

She added: “We also hope to be a pro-active group, campaigning on the issues that affect our members, because together we have a louder voice in the community.

“We appreciate that childcare can be a problem so small children and babies are welcome too.”

Stour Power WI will meet on the first Monday of each month at St Paul’s Church in Throop between 11am and 1pm.

Additional meetings will be held at Castlepoint Library and at the Broadway Pub.
