THE UK’s first multi-purpose coastal activity park will open in Boscombe this April, with organisers promising it will offer something for everyone.

Details of the £3.3m park have been unveiled, along with more details of the watersports, family activities and prestigious national competitions it will offer.

The 1.5km zone will start at Toft Steps and extend eastwards beyond Boscombe Pier. A multi-use sports area will be able to be used for volleyball, beach tennis, tchoukball or beach football and will play host to five major sporting events, including a regular triathlon series and National Surf Lifesaving Championships.

The problematic surf reef will be opened up to snorkellers and there will be dedicated zones for kite and wind surfers.

Bournemouth Surf School and Sorted Surf School will also provide stand-up paddleboarding, surfing, bodyboarding and kayaking in water sports zones.

An outdoor gym trail will run the length of the park and there will also be running and walking trails. There will be a children’s splash park, and a ‘spa pod’.

Other sports offered within the activity park will include table-tennis, climbing and slack-lining.

Coastal Activity Park manager David Collier said: “The new park will be a fantastic opportunity to try a new sport, improve levels of fitness or simply sit back and enjoy the one of the national sporting events we’ll be hosting.”

The park will be operated by the council’s seafront team, in assocation with the National Coastal Tourism Academy. It is funded by the Government’s Coastal Communities Fund.

Cllr Lawrence Williams, cabinet member for tourism, said: “Boscombe seafront has undergone an enormous transformation in the past few years and is now one of the most popular stretches of beach in the area.

“This park builds on that success.”
