POLICE were at the scene of a burglary in Boscombe this morning.

The Devon Candies newsagent in Sea Road had its front window smashed with a brick at around 3am this morning and around £2,500 stolen.

Officers were at the shop this morning carrying out an investigation.

Owner Dipak Patel said the raid was the first since he started running the shop ten years ago.

"It is very frustrating," he said.

"About five years ago someone tried to smash the window as we weren't open but he wasn't able to break through.

"I suppose this may be people who know the shop, who live here in Boscombe.

"The police said they have already caught a suspect."

A spokesman for Dorset Police said a 34-year-old Bournemouth woman had been arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Mr Patel said he believed there was less lighting at the top of Sea Road than in the past making it difficult to see criminal activity on CCTV.

"The light isn't very good along there now," he said.

"They seem to have taken away the light by KFC and the other is blocked by the trees."

Boscombe West councillor Philip Stanley Watts said he had spoken to Bournemouth Council engineers about improving the lighting in the area and a site visit was carried out today.

He said there are plans to introduce more lighting and cut back trees in Sea Road to increase visibility, but they were dependent on cost.

"There needs to be better lighting in other areas of Boscombe too," he said.

"I keep being told it is down to money. But this issue is affecting people's livelihoods.

"It is all about designing out crime."
