A TRANQUIL country cemetery has been desecrated by fly-tippers who, over the past few weeks, have dumped five large commercial fridges near graves.

“Please respect our cemetery,” is the plea from Lytchett Minster and Upton Town councillors outraged by what has taken place at Upton Cemetery and which will cost council tax payers hundreds of pounds to remove and dispose of properly.

“These are the heartless actions of irresponsible people who have no thought for others,” said Cllr Mikka Pryor, chairman of amenities.

“It's disgusting and disrespectful,” said Cllr John Small, vice-chairman of the council.

“This costs us money which is far better spent elsewhere and which ultimately the public have to pay for.”

With access along a quiet country lane off the A350 it is all too easy for fly-tipping to take place.

A large commercial fridge with broken door glass was left outside the cemetery storehouse and a handful of others were dumped inside.

“The cemetery store has been broken into so many times we just don't lock it any more,” said town clerk Karen Wright.

“It's going to cost at least £100-150 to remove the fridges. Because they may contain potentially harmful CFCs they have to be disposed of properly.”

The council has posted notices warning against fly-tipping, which can carry up to a £50,000 fine and is investigating other methods of preventing anti-social behaviour, working with Dorset Police, the Environment Agency and Purbeck District Council.

Tyres have also been dumped in the grounds.

“The town council prides itself on the high standard of the cemetery and actions of this sort are very upsetting for the relatives and friends who visit the graves to pay their respects,” said Cllr Pryor.

There is no electricity so no CCTV at the cemetery which dates from the 1950s and contains the last resting places of more than 1,000 residents.

“We try to keep it as nice as we can. It's really sad,” said Cllr Pryor.

Daffodil bulbs have been planted, the entrance improved and residents have donated benches.

Anyone witnessing fly-tipping is urged to report it to the town council on 01202 632070.
