EAGLE-eyed neighbours are needed to join a “specially-trained” team in the fight against crime in Purbeck.

Dorset Police wants volunteers to help officers patrolling the streets by monitoring the district’s CCTV cameras.

These civilian helpers, initially based in Swanage, will become the hidden eyes of the police, as they alert officers to crimes taking place or assist in the hunt for missing people.

However, the hours are not for the faint-hearted, with the focus on weekends, into the early hours, and during special events.

“We appreciate these times are when you most like to enjoy your spare time,” explained a Dorset Police spokesman. “This is why we would like to establish a team of specially trained volunteers who we can call upon to share the unsociable hours we require.”

Attention to detail and good radio communication skills are essential and so is a high level of professionalism at all times, police insist.

The spokesman added: “You will provide a valuable service to your community helping to protect both people and property.

“Having our CCTV systems monitored ensures that the best possible evidence is available to help bring to justice those who are willing to commit crime.

“There may be occasions when you would be required to provide evidence for a case in court.

“If you are interested and would like to know more, please send you name and contact details to us and we will get in touch with you as soon as possible.”
