IMPROVEMENTS budgeted at £85,387 are to be made at Hamworthy Park but some of the “Friends” are not impressed.

Borough of Poole aims to spend the money from developer contributions on a range of upgrades at the popular park, which includes the borough’s only paddling pool.

But Fred Winwood, committee member of the Friends of Hamworthy Park, said: “I would question the word ‘improvements’. They have had meetings and consultations in the past. They have drawn up lists and priorities of what people want to see done in the park.

“The two main priorities have been an upgrade to the toilets and café and get rid of the boat compound. None of this is addressed. What is the point of all this consultation if you don’t act on it?”

One of the changes is to reduce the size of the boat compound for the Outdoor Education Centre. However, Mr Winwood said it would be enclosed, which took it out of the public realm.

A petanque area will be created near the existing car park and slacklining posts will be installed near the Outdoor Education Centre at the eastern end of the park.

The promenade path will be extended and new self-closing gates put in at the entrances to the play area. Up to 10 new beach hut bases, separately funded will be put down.

Work is likely to start in the spring and include new secure fencing and the painting or replacing of existing storage containers, subject to planning permission.

Cllr Judy Butt, cabinet portfolio holder with responsibility for leisure services said: “We are delighted to be able to make these improvements to a much-loved area, particularly as the final plans have been heavily influenced by park users themselves.

“We believe these works will add significantly to people’s enjoyment, and continue to make Hamworthy Park a key destination for residents and visitors.”
