DURLSTON Country Park has been named one of the top spots in the UK to catch a glimpse of Bottlenose Dolphins.

The Purbeck coastline, and the Swanage country park in particular, have been highlighted by worldwide ocean mammal conservation specialists Planet Whale.

Dylan Walker, Co-founder of the organisation, said: “There are plenty of fantastic whale spotting locations across the UK. Durlston Country Park has often had confirmed sightings of Bottlenose Dolphins.”

A number of Daily Echo readers have reported spotting Bottlenose Dolphins swimming in local waters over the years.

Mr Walker, a former marine mammal scientist and renowned dolphin and whale expert, said: “Why travel thousands of miles abroad to see these beautiful creatures when you can find them on your doorstep?

“Spotters in the area should look out for a large, robust grey dolphin.

“Increasing awareness of these amazing animals in the UK is vital if we are to save them from the threats they still face across the globe today.”

Planet Whale will launch its Save the Whales: Reloaded campaign in Brighton on October 25 and 26.

This event will bring together hundreds of conservationists, divers, tour operators and whale and dolphin experts from across the world.

Mr Walker said: “Whilst whaling is much reduced, these beautiful creatures are losing ground to a whole plethora of destructive issues, including over-fishing and drowning in nets, pollution, habitat destruction and climate change.”
