A MAN “lost control” and punched and beat a victim unconscious with part of a chair, leaving him with a fractured eye socket.

Pierre Wakanena, 30, of Commercial Road in Bournemouth town centre, carried out the attack after a drunken argument.

He was jailed for five years at Bournemouth Crown Court on Friday after a jury found him guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent.

The court heard a group of people were in Wakanena's home after a night out on November 26 last year, including victim Brian Kilonzo, who had been invited back.

Judge James Meston QC said memories were affected by alcohol and the attack may have started after a misunderstanding or in self defence after a blow by the victim.

“In any event, you became angry and lost control,” Judge Meston told the defendant.

“You punched him to the floor and several times in the face and you picked up the metal base of a chair and continued to hit him while he lay on the floor.

“You dragged the unconscious man outside and left him there. You went to bed where you were found by police.”

The victim was unconscious for 24 hours and spent three days in hospital.

He suffered cuts, bruising and swelling and a fractured eye socket, and was off work for five weeks.

Nick Robinson, defending said Wakanena is from the Congo and saw his father killed in the civil war when he was aged 15.

“That could have broken him, but he has since come to England with his family and completed a degree in business and he has two jobs,” said Mr Robinson.

Mr Robinson argued for a 12-month suspended sentence and said a witness had seen the victim throw the first punch.

Judge Meston said the violence went far beyond any claim of reasonable self-defence.
