STUDENTS at two Bournemouth secondary schools came together to mark the International Day of Peace.

Avonbourne and Harewood Colleges, which are part of the Avonbourne Academy Trust, listened to talks from Bournemouth-based organisations and took to the playing fields to form the peace symbol, on Friday, September 21.

Debbie Godfrey-Phaure, Avonbourne Headteacher, said that the students are ‘truly global citizens.’

She added: “They have a heart and soul for their community and the world we all live in. I am very proud of them.”

Visiting speakers who gave talks to the pupils came from The Butterfly Foundation, a Bournemouth charity which works with people affected by domestic violence, Amnesty International and BCHA.

Pupils then took part in drama, music and art workshops to express their personal thoughts on what they had heard.

Naomi Cox, one of the teachers from Avonbourne who organised the events, said: “We deliberately wanted to focus what is a worldwide day of celebration and make it personal and local for the children.

“It was an opportunity for students to stop and think of what peace means to them.
