TWO Dorset Police officers have received a commendation for rescuing a family from a smoke-logged house.

PC Tim Brehmer and PC Rhys Griffiths selflessly went into the house in Christchurch on October 27 last year and led the two adults and two children to safety.

They made the brave decision to enter the heavily smoke filled house as firefighters made their way to the scene.

In recognition of their conduct, the pair received Dorset Fire and Rescue Service’s Chief Fire Officer’s Certificate for Commendation together with a Society for the Protection of Life from Fire national award.

The award was handed out at the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service’s annual ceremony.

Dave Bryant, ex-station manager at Christchurch, received a community safety award for his voluntary efforts in carrying out home safety checks. As did Teresa Cross, education manager for the service, in recognition of her efforts in developing and delivery educational activities for children and young people.

The service’s extrication team, who rescue people from road accidents, also received the Making a Difference Award.

Dorset’s Chief Fire Officer Darran Gunter said: “I am very proud of the service we deliver to Dorset and of all those who make up that service.”

Speaking about the awards, he added: “This allows us to praise the excellent work being done above and beyond the call of duty with regards to work within the community, making a difference to the service, young achievers and professional achievements.”
