AS Dorset’s multiple medal winning cyclist Sarah Storey gears up for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, there is one person helping to ensure she shines in the global media spotlight.

And it’s not her coach, nutritionist or even her physiotherapist, but 23-year-old Katie Farley her stylist.

It was Katie’s job to make sure Sarah looked the part at the official launch of the GB Paralympic team earlier this month and also for her first TV interview.

Katie, of West Parley, says it is vital to win a client’s trust. “It is important to build up a good relationship with your client so that you get to know their personality, style as well as their body shape and size. “ But there is a deeper bond between the two girls. For they have both had to overcome physical limitations in their lives. Sarah was born without a functioning left-hand and Katie has cerebral palsy which affects all of her limbs.

Katie attended Victoria School in Poole from the age of two to 16 and now she has achieved a diploma in fashion styling at the London College of Style.

“I have always loved fashion ever since I was a little girl,” Katie explains.

“Although my work is quite slow, I make sure it is of a very good standard.

My heart really goes into it. I can’t do all the finishing touches to an outfit myself but I’m lucky that I’ve got my seamstress to help me,” she laughs with a sideways glance at her mother Sally.

Sally adds: “Katie has so many ideas in her head but it is hard for her because although she thinks and feels the same as we do, her body doesn’t keep up with her brain so she has to work four times harder than most people.”

But it’s a labour of love for Katie whose favourite designers include McQueen and Galliano. She adds: “I like anything quirky – I’m a bit of a rock chick at heart.”
