A RAPIST who subjected a Bournemouth grandmother to a terrifying ordeal in her own home has been jailed for life.

The sentence was handed down by His Honour Judge John Harrow at Bournemouth Crown Court.

The judge told Paul Bailey, 49, who is also known as Wheatley, that he would serve at least eight years before being considered for release. He will also be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.

A jury found him guilty last month and during his trial was told that Bailey, of Windsor Road, Bournemouth, bolted the door so his victim couldn’t escape, then raped her.

He had denied three charges of rape and one of false imprisonment.

The jury of seven men and five women found him not guilty of one of the rapes but guilty of the other offences.

In recorded interviews played in court, the victim said she was “mortally terrified” by the incident on February 26 this year and added: “It was quite horrendous. It all felt very, very degrading and horrible.

“I could feel myself not being able to breathe.”

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said Bailey told her she would not see her children again if she screamed and added: “I felt I was fighting for my life – it shocked me tremendously.

“He was stronger than me and he overpowered me.

“I couldn’t risk leaving my children.

“When he left it was such a relief, I was glad to be alive.”
