Volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards are playing their part in providing safety cover for the Olympics .

Poole-based RNLI volunteers kept an eagle eye over all the sailing events at Weymouth and will also be at the Paralympic Games.

Lifeguards provided safety cover for the triathlon and marathon swimming events in Hyde Park, London.

They were on duty as Lymington sailor Ben Ainslie took his fourth gold medal as he won the men’s Finn class and will continue throughout the cold water based events.

The lifesaving charity is being funded by London 2012 organisers LOCOG, to provide safety and medical cover.

RNLI chief executive Paul Boissier said: “The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is extremely proud to be involved in the 2012 Olympics . As a charity with our headquarters in Dorset, it is especially pleasing to be involved in the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events happening in Weymouth, almost on our doorstep.

“For our volunteer crew members who are providing safety support during the sailing races, this will be a unique and memorable experience.”
