NEARLY a kilometre of yellow lines will be removed from Bournemouth’s roads in a bid to create more parking for motorists.

Hundreds of extra spaces will be provided when lines are taken away from 14 roads over the next few weeks.

Residents in other areas are also being asked to highlight roads which could benefit from the initiative.

But not everyone is thrilled with the idea.

In Denmark Road in Winton, some residents said the narrow road would be too congested if parking is allowed on both sides of the road.

“Big lorries need to get along this road so it will be difficult” said resident Sally Simons. “Parking is a problem in this area and people are always getting tickets.”

Karen Whillier said: “It is very difficult to drive down this road when cars are parked on both sides. There is an MOT garage here and other businesses so it will make things worse.”

And Bob Green added: “We get a lot of lorries here and traffic from the medical centre will have trouble getting out if people park on both sides.”

But John Cole said he hopes increased parking will slow down the flow of traffic.

“People drive too fast around areas like this. I don’t think congested roads are always a problem.”

The council launched a programme earlier this to review the need for yellow lines across the borough and a spokesman said the roads were selected after requests from residents.

Cllr Michael Filer, cabinet member for transport and technical services, said: “I am delighted we have been able to create on street parking in key areas across Bournemouth.

“I am determined to keep the momentum going with this review and I would encourage residents who query the yellow lines in their road to contact the council.”
