POLICE in Fordingbridge are appealing for witnesses after a man snatched a 76-year-old woman’s handbag.

At about 3.30pm on Saturday, the woman, who lives locally, was walking her bicycle along Bartons Road, Fordingbridge, when a man grabbed her handbag and a bag of shopping from the basket at the front of the bike.

He ran up Barton Road towards Pickets Close and the allotments before turning left towards Normandy Way, emptying out the shopping bag as he ran. The woman was shocked, but not hurt.

The man is described as 5ft 10ins tall with black hair and wearing a black jacket.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said they believed he was standing outside 21 Bartons Road, pretending to use a mobile phone, just before the incident.

Police have conducted house to house enquiries and are checking CCTV tapes in the area as well as appealing for witnesses or anyone who recognises the man to contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
