GET ready for heavy traffic and possibly illegal encampments.

That’s the message from North Dorset District Council ahead of the Great Dorset Steam Fair .

The annual event will attract around 200,000 visitors from August 29 to September 2 to a site near Tarrant Hinton.

A council spokesman said: “Their presence contributes to the local economy but can also cause problems.

“Home-owners close to the site, are advised to be mindful of security. Out-houses, sheds and barns can be easy targets for petty criminals.

“They should also be wary of offers of work from itinerant labourers such as Tarmac crews.

“Land owners are advised to secure gates and other access points to open ground where illegal encampments can be set up.

“Removing uninvited guests from private land is the responsibility of the land owner and it can be costly and time-consuming, so preventative measures are a wise precaution.”

Dorset Police will try and keep the traffic moving on the A354 and surrounding roads.
