A COUPLE were left ‘disgusted’ when their Scottish £20 note was refused by the cafe at Bournemouth Flying Club.

Linda and Mike Moran from Edinburgh were holidaying in the area in July when they visited the cafe but upon ordering their food were told the flying club could not accept Scottish money.

The couple, who have been coming to the area for 30 years on holiday, refused to pay any other way and left the cafe to find somewhere else to eat.

Linda, 65, said: “It was really embarrassing.

“You just can’t understand it in this day and age.

“Years ago you might have understood it a little more but not in 2012.

“I have never had to go to the bank to change our money. It’s just never been a problem.”

She added: “I was really quite disgusted. It was just the way she said: “We can’t take these”.

“But it’s not her fault though, she had obviously been told to say it.

“She said their accountant told them they are not allowed to take these notes. She knew she could as it was sterling, but that’s what she had been told.

“We were really embarrassed by it – there were a lot of people standing about.

“I have emailed them as well to ask for an explanation – that was about two days ago – but not heard anything back yet.

“We went to lots of little cafes during our stay and didn’t have a problem anywhere else.”

A spokesperson for Bournemouth Flying Club said: “Company policy is that Scottish notes are not legal tender and therefore we are not obliged to accept them.

“This is the information that our cafe manager Lin Clark was referring to.”
