A state-of-the-art centre has opened its doors in Bournemouth to support victims of rape and sexual assault.

ARC Dorset has been created by Dorset Police and NHS Dorset to provide crisis support, counselling referral, health and welfare and information all under one roof.

Victims may be referred by police or other agencies but can also self-refer without reporting an offence to police if they choose to do so.

The service is available to men, women and children.

The centre, which will be available 24 hours a day, is in a town centre location and can be contacted via telephone or email. It is supported by the Dorset Rape Crisis Support Centre.

It offers a number of rooms and suites designed to make victims feel comfortable and to gather the best evidence possible.

The new facility was officially opened by Baroness Vivien Stern CBE, the author of the government’s 2010 review into how rape complaints are handled by public authorities in England and Wales.

She said: “It is marvellous and is staffed by some outstandingly committed people. It is not just a room where people get examined and it is a very important message about how this community feels about supporting those who have been sexually assaulted.”

She said victims will be looked after and valued at ARC Dorset and added: “The importance of this programme is that it puts the victims at the heart of the process.”

Detective Superintendent Sara Glen said: “We want victims to feel safe and sheltered at what is a very traumatic time for them. Dorset is a very safe county but those who do fall victim to rape and sexual assault deserve the highest quality of care possible.”

And Dr Karen Kirkham from the Dorset Care Commissioning Group added: “This gives the NHS an opportunity to support individuals at a very difficult time.”

ARC Dorset manager is David Hilliam who said: “As well as providing access to crisis support, medical examination and advice and counselling referrals, we also try to focus on the smaller things that make a difference, like a cup of tea, a hot shower and a change of clothes.

“We want victims to come to see us to get the help they need.”
