A GROUP of 125 cyclists tried to beat the first yacht home in the JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race.

The cyclists, the majority of whom come from Bournemouth including organiser Andy Graham, finished the race around the Isle of Wight in 3 hours and 30 mins – 21 minutes behind the winning French boat Actual.

However, the cyclists, who are part of a bike club formed at the JP Morgan office in the town, look set to top the £100,000 mark with around £17,000 raised from this event.

They have already raised £83,000 from previous Round the Island Race attempts.

Funds go to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, which is the official charity of the race, and takes young cancer sufferers sailing.

“The cycling is a little bit of a sideshow to the main event but it is something that we enjoy,” said 44-year-old Graham.

“We formed a bike club and in the last five years we have had this event going on and each year it has got bigger.”
