ARE more motorists drink-driving or is that increased traffic patrols have nabbed more offenders?

No matter. The simple fact that 52 people were arrested for drink-driving on Dorset’s roads during the first two weeks of June is sobering enough.

It’s a worrying 30 per cent increase over the same period last year. Clearly, the message isn’t being heard.

Most people can’t comprehend how anyone can get behind the wheel of a vehicle while over the drink-drive limit knowing that they face a minimum 12-month driving ban and possibly a prison sentence.

Worse still, is the damage – possibly with fatal consequences – they can cause on the roads to themselves and other road users.

Perhaps a more vociferous all-year-round campaign highlighting the dangers might be in order.

It seems that some people only think the drink-drive laws need to be observed at Christmas.
