VISITORS to Moors Valley Country Park got a close-up look at live butterfly and moth displays at a special event.

Experts from the Butterfly Conservation Society were on hand at the park, near Ringwood, to explain all about their life cycle, identification and what they like to eat, and there was also information on butterfly-friendly plants from local specialist Knoll Gardens.

The aim of the event, which also included crafts and a butterfly and moth-themed family quiz trail, was to increase awareness about British butterfly species and encourage people to plant at least one butterfly-friendly plant in their garden.

Rangers from the park go on the road around West Moors, Ferndown, Verwood, Wimborne and Colehill this summer with their Nuts about Nature programme.

The programme uses animal characters for its nature-based events and the latest addition is an orange-tip butterfly, named Brian by seven-year-old Joe O’Connor from Colehill during the butterfly event.
