AN off licence was caught selling bottles of counterfeit wine thanks to the dodgy spelling.

Hazel Supermarket in Bournemouth was ordered to pay £670 in fines and costs after an investigation by Trading Standards.

The counterfeit bottles of Jacob’s Creek were known to be circulating and had mistakes like ‘Austrlia’ and ‘Drink Responsibiliy’ on the label.

The bottles were spotted and seized before Christmas by officers who visited the store in Wimborne Road, Kinson.

Owner Zeynal Altun pleaded guilty to offences under the Trades Mark Act at Bournemouth Magistrates Court last Wednesday.

Andy Sheriff, from Bourne-mouth trading standards, said: “I am pleased to report there was nothing in the drinks that would cause a health concern.

“However, if there had been, we would not have been able to trace the source.

“The defendant told us he bought the wine from someone who came past in a vehicle.”

The Echo visited the store yesterday but Mr Altun was not in there. A staff member took the Echo’s details.

Trading Standards carried out their pre-Christmas crackdown in Boscombe, Kinson, Winton and Old Christchurch Road, seizing wine and vodka.

Mr Sheriff added: “Hazel Supermarket is the first of a series of traders due before the courts in the next few months.

“Not only is this kind of activity illegal, but it puts honest traders at a disadvantage.”

Cllr David Smith, cabinet member the environment, said: “We would urge residents to be very careful where they shop, bearing in mind that some shopkeepers think it acceptable to try and cheat the public.”
