MAX Bygraves’s fans from across the country are putting pen to paper to send their greetings to the veteran entertainer.

The popular singer, writer and comedian who lived in Bournemouth for many years before moving to Queensland, Australia with his late wife Blossom, is suffering from Alzheimer’s.

His daughter Christine wrote to the Daily Echo asking readers to send cards to Max, 89, who was awarded an OBE in 1982.

She said the father-of-three was facing his condition “with courage and good humour”.

She added: “One of Max’s great pleasures is receiving postcards.

“We take a daily walk to the letter box and I am sure receiving your cards would be uplifting for him.”

Among those sending greetings down under are Ray Townson, 87, and his wife, Enid, 83, from Poole Road, Bournemouth who recall the much-loved star opening local church fetes.

Ray said: “We miss Max – he was a great entertainer and a great man.”

Enid reminisced: “We used to see him at Chez Fred’s fish and chip shop.

“He had a nice personality and, although I never spoke to him, I enjoyed being in his presence.

Alan Norbury, 74, from Blackpool, said he would also be writing to Max.

He added: “I remember him saying, during his last stand-up show at our Grand Theatre, that he was not turning his back on Great Britain.

“His health wasn’t very good and he ended up getting a standing ovation.

“I’m so glad I was there.”

Loyal fan Pam George, 81, from Hayling Island, Hamp-shire, also plans to send Max a postcard.

She said: “I’ve seen him in London at the Victoria Palace and Palladium, as well as in Fareham and Brighton, and have many of his CDs.”

Josie Fiddy, 67, from Great Yarmouth, said Max’s songs brought back memories of her childhood.

She said: “He reminds me of the old days and I’m going to send him a postcard from Great Yarmouth, as I’m sure he once performed here.”

l Postcards should be sent to Max, c/o 2120 Fernlea Close, Gracemere, Hope Island, 4212, Qld, Australia.

When will the Echo and the conurbation acknowledge that Max Bygraves NEVER lived in Bournemouth! His house was in Poole! So he is the Poole entertainer. As mentined by others before, Woods of Bournemouth is in Poole, Bournemouth University is in Poole, LV is in Poole and the home of the BSO is in Poole, ergo the PSO!!!! Get it right or is it just sloppy reporting?

Thats a bit pendantic Max lived in Sandbourne Road, right on the border of the two conurbations. My Wife and I , many years ago lived in Crosby Road ( in Bournemouth) just a few yards from Sandbourne Road and often saw the Bygrave family and a young Tony Blackburn (visiting a girl friend) then in short trousers and school cap and blazer. A pleasant area in those days. Sad to hear of Max's problems, a good and a nice man.

Like the Beatles at the time . Max too was also part of my childhood.
In 1966 my mother and I first encountered him almost running over our toes in a chaufer driven black Rolls Royce when he then gave us a nod from the back seat.
Despite seeing him on black and white TV every week with Singalongamax, he decided he liked it down here and moved to Sandbourne Rd when as a milkman myself would see him going to buy cigars and newspapers from Canford Cliffs newsagents at that time 1970's on the corner of Maxwell Rd. A few years later I spoke to him in his dressing room at the Pavilion and as an 18 year old myself he'd pat me on the head. I had the pleasure of meeting this gent every few years and like one commenter wrote : He'd always create a nice friendly atmosphere. Singalongstillmax and I've still got your dark blue tie.

As already mentioned Max lived in Sandbourne Road which is on the Bournemouth side of the boundary which runs down the middle of Branksome Dene Chine. My family used to live quite close by and we used to see him drive by occasionally.

Max, I remember you when you played at the Palladium in London's west end in 'Top of the Town' in the 50's, I saw you twice in Brisbane in the 70's and have been honored to have been around for much of your career.
While, like you am English, born in 41 in south London, I have like you chosen to live in retirement in Australia, you in Queensland and me on the North West Coast of Tasmania.
My late father served in the forces during WW11, and was attached to ENSA where he met up with you and many who later made a career in show business.
You were his favorite entertainer, you have always been mine, and I wish you peace and happiness for ever
