A GROUP of Bournemouth University media students are asking Dorset residents to say thanks to firefighters as part of a project to recognise unsung heroes.

Six students have created a website and promotional material to encourage members of the public to say thanks in a show of appreciation of firefighters who have helped them or someone they know.

It is all part of a project called Rise To, an enterprise challenge for young people, which involves them choosing an unsung hero and then creating a campaign involving the public to give thanks to them. Nikita Potton, 19, said: “We have got 870 people so far to say thanks, but we want to get to 2,000 by the time of the deadline on Sunday. We’re up against other universities across the country and need to get the most thanks on the website.

“We chose firefighters as we think that they are worthy unsung heroes. We’ve been out to all the halls of residence for uni students and speaking to the public to ask them to join the campaign.”
