POOLE Hospital has introduced a complete ban on ward visiting after a possible outbreak of the sickness and diarrhoea bug norovirus.

One ward and three bays on three other wards have suspected cases, and with the illness still rife in the community, the hospital says it has “reluctantly” brought in the restrictions as a precaution.

Although the hospital has had to restrict visitors on previous occasions this winter, this is thought to be the first blanket ban. Any next of kin who feel their visit is essential are asked to contact the nurse in charge of the ward for advice.

Director of nursing and patient services Martin Smits said: “We understand how upsetting these restrictions can be for patients, relatives and other visitors and we thank them for their patience during this period.

“We have to ensure that we take all available responsible measures to minimise the spread of this illness and to maintain the smooth running of the hospital for all of our patients.”

He added: “Visiting restrictions are reviewed daily and will remain in place only as long as strictly necessary.”

Outpatient clinics, day case and diagnostic services are not affected. But people with an appointment should stay away and tell the hospital as soon as possible if they, or anyone else in the household, has had sickness or diarrhoea in the previous three days.

All wards at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital remain closed to visitors, apart from next of kin, as a precaution. The trust is also advising people not to bring young children or the frail into the building.

Anyone going in to either hospital is asked to wash their hands after going to the toilet and use the alcohol hand gel when entering and leaving a ward.
