THE vacant former TJ Hughes unit at Boscombe’s Sovereign Centre could be split up to attract new traders, a meeting heard.

Tim Clark, head of retail at letting agents Hughes Ellard, gave the news at February’s meeting of Boscombe Business Forum.

He said Sovereign Centre landlord New River Retail owns part of the space and was in negotiations with the leaseholder of the TJ Hughes unit.

Mr Clark also told the traders the void rate “presents reasonably well” compared to some other shopping centres, where up to a third of the units are empty.

Boscombe has recently lost TJ Hughes but it only has five vacant units out of 40. Mr Clark said Robert Dyas only pulled out because it was the firm’s strategy to concentrate on Greater London.

Mr Clark said Sports Direct had just signed a new five-year lease and said they were in talks with several more.
