A CHARITY set up in memory of fallen Ferndown Royal Marine Lieutenant John Thornton has raised its first £250,000.

The John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation was set up following the 22-year-old’s death in Afghanistan in 2008 to support young achievers in the local area.

John’s parents Peter and Linda wanted the money raised to inspire young people to be determined, unselfish and cheerful in adversity and are thrilled that the trustees have agreed to commit £60,000 in grants and bursaries this year.

Ferndown Upper School, the Dorset and Wilts Wing Air Training Corps and the Air Cadets Junior Leaders will each receive £15,000 to provide grants for its members who are dedicated to excellence in various fields, or supporting projects.

Students and cadets will be encouraged to apply for funds to assist them in their personal projects, with each being expected to provide a brief, fully-costed business case. Winners will be selected by the board.

Other local groups such as The Dorset Music Service, Dorset Fire and Rescue Cadets and Beaucroft School will receive continued support and Parley First School – where John was a pupil – and Ferndown First Schools have been added to the educational beneficiaries list for 2012.

Peter Thornton said hitting the £250,000 mark was “fantastic”.

He added: “It’s one of those things that’s taken us a little bit by surprise. When we started it we thought it was nice and we hoped it would keep up, but the donations and support from local people have been amazing.

“John would have been thrilled. Far too often in the news you hear about young people who have done awful things, but here we have young people that are doing something positive not only for themselves but also for the community.”
