COMMUNITIES are being urged to take care of their elderly neighbours as the cold snap continues to bite.

Weather forecasters predict that freezing conditions will continue into the weekend with temperatures hovering around the zero mark for today, tomorrow and Saturday, plunging into minus figures at night.

And although there is a chance of snowfall in the county on Sunday, forecasters say it will quickly turn to sleet.

Bournemouth Age UK says there is some simple advice that people can follow to make sure they stay safe this winter.

Sarah Carroll, head of community services, said: “We would just like to remind people that if they have elderly neighbours or relatives to keep checking on them.

“And elderly people should make sure they wear hats and gloves indoors as that is where they lose the most heat.

“If you can only heat one room, make sure you stay in there.”

Eric Woods, chairman of Highcliffe Community Association, said it was very important to be neighbourly during severe weather conditions.

He added: “It’s important to watch out for your neighbours and ensure that others are properly looked after during the cold and snow.

“There’s a huge percentage of older people here, the proportions are probably greater in Highcliffe than the rest of the borough, so there’s a greater spread of need for it and for looking after each other.”

Winter can be a dangerous time for elderly people who are at risk from falling in icy conditions as well as suffering flu and hypothermia.

The Department of Health has advised people to check local weather forecasts for the latest information on weather conditions and staying safe when outdoors.

A spokesman added: “We are working closely with the NHS and local authorities to ensure vulnerable people stay well during cold weather and get the help they need within their communities.” Anyone who would like to get help for an elderly person can contact Bournemouth Age UK on 01202 530530.
