UNIVERSITY students are continuing their clean-up campaign at a Bournemouth park blighted by flashers and cruisers.
Around 20 students have been making weekly visits to Meyrick Park, clearing overgrown rhododendron and holly bushes and planning new pathways.
Bournemouth West MP Conor Burns and PC Jill Lavin turned up to their latest session, to see the progress they had made and to lend a helping hand.
It’s all part of an ongoing project to make Meyrick Park more open and less intimidating, and reduce the potential for sexual activity there.
The next step will see students planting wildflowers in the park.
Jesse Banovic, of the Students’ Union, said: “We’ve already cut back quite a lot of dense, heavy holly and rhododendron bushes.
“There was a lot of seedy activity going on down there, we want to make it safer and more family friendly for people with children or dog walkers. It’s such a gorgeous park and it’s rewarding to see the progress we have made.” Mr Burns said he was impressed with the students’ work and their commitment to the project.
“I think students do a very good job, both for the local economy and the local community,” he said.
“I see all the time as I engage with the Students’ Union that there are groups of students doing good in the community in Bournemouth but they are not shouting about it enough.
“This great conservation project, in Meyrick Park, in the centre of Bournemouth is a fantastic thing to have done.”
