We are looking for Dorset’s best apprentice.

In the run-up to National Apprentice Week 2012, which takes place from Monday February 6 until Saturday, February 10, the Daily Echo is looking for one young person to become Apprentice of the Year.

The winner will receive £100 in equipment to help on their career path, as well as a certificate and framed front page.

The competition also aims to highlight the achievements of all apprentices across the county, as well as the varied types of apprenticeships available from different learning providers.

Nominations can come from employers, friends, family and tutors who believe they know an apprentice who deserves the prestigious title.

Recently-retired businessman Ray Coles supports apprenticeships.

Mr Coles, who began his career as an RAF electronics apprentice, has just stepped down as managing director of Dorset-based Ultra Electronics.

He said: “They are a bridge between school and work, and enable young people to gain confidence and self-worth in the workplace.”

Mr Coles left the RAF in 1974 as an electronics technician, eventually becoming a managing director at Waverly Electronics, seeing it through its rebranding as Ultra, which now has a turnover of £45million.

He added: “All our apprentices at Ultra have done very well.

“Often they don’t know very much to begin with, but they become very sought after by all departments, who see them as the best option around.

“They get someone who already knows the ropes and knows the business.”

Jack's an inspiration to others

ENGINEERING apprentice Jack Ingram received high praise after winning the prestigious Young Apprentice of the Year Award from Dorset Chamber of Commerce.

The 19-year-old took up a four-year Engineering and Electrical apprenticeship after finding it difficult to settle into his A-level studies.

And 18 months down the line he says it has been the best decision of his life. Jack, from Corfe Mullen, spends one day a week at Bournemouth and Poole College and the rest of his time working for one of the UK's most innovative companies
