SLADES Farm is in the process of being transformed from a “green desert” to a thriving community space, it has been claimed.

A long-term vision for the area has already seen a community cycle track, new playground and dog training area opened to the public.

And there are now plans for an outdoor gym, cafe and toilets, an improved skate park, nature pond, new changing facilities, urban community garden and a city farm.

Improvements are also going to be made to Winton and Glenmoor Schools’ outdoor sports facilities, including new changing rooms, new sports hall and new sports pitches and courts.

The eventual aim is that Slades Farm will achieve Green Flag status and be able to be used for arts and cultural events.

Cllr Rod Cooper, cabinet member for economy, leisure and tourism, said: “I remember when I was first elected we thought the area was a green desert, there was nothing there.

“We were a little bit concerned about having a cycle track there but our fears were allayed and we are delighted to see it being so well used.

“I very much want to see a city farm there and I’m delighted that this proposal incorporates that.

“And we are looking at putting an outdoor keep fit area there using money from the Local Improvement Fund.

“We’ve been talking to the officers and hopefully that will happen shortly.”

And Cllr Barry Goldbart praised the plans and said: “The area has been brought to life and as far as I can see we are making good use of a town asset.”
