WE make no apology for returning to the theme of drink-driving for the second day in a row.

The figures for Dorset over the Christmas and New Year period are published today and they make grim reading.

Disappointing just doesn’t do it.

Dorset traffic officers arrested 133 people for drink-driving in December, up almost 50 per cent on last year.

It’s fairly obvious that the number of people who actually drive around over the limit is much higher.

The campaign warning motorists not to drink and drive has been around for years and clearly has no effect on some – especially young men who think they’ll never get caught.

As the sister of one victim of a drunk driver speculates today, they probably won’t stop until they are caught or until something happens to a member of their family. Given national trends in drink-driving, toughening up the law looks like being the only answer.
