WORK to stop flooding on Parley Lane near Bournemouth International Airport is starting today for three weeks.

The work by Dorset County Council is being carried out following problems with flooding across the road, which is in a national speed limit area and is unlit.

Recent site investigations by county engineers have found that the existing surface water drainage system is no longer working and needs to be replaced.

Dorset Highways, the county council’s roads and transport service, will be carrying out the works on a 400-metre section of Parley Lane near the junction with Merritown Lane.

Temporary traffic signals will be in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm, Mondays to Saturdays. The work is being done outside of peak times in order to minimise disruption to traffic although it is thought it may cause minor delays.

Chairman of Hurn Parish Council and borough councillor Margaret Phipps said: “All of the parish council has been informed about the work.

“In their email, county said it may cause minor delays but we will have to see.

“Possibly when it starts we may hear some comments but I do not know.

“There are problems with that part of the road and it does get rather waterlogged at times.

“When the traffic lights were being installed near Bournemouth Airport traffic flowed very well so I don’t anticipate any major issues.

“It has got to be done and we’ll just have to see.”

David Marsh, chairman of trustees at Bournemouth Aviation Museum, which shares land with Adventure Wonderland, said: “I’m glad something is being done about the flooding, as it is a problem that needs to be sorted.

“I hope the work will be done swiftly and doesn’t affect too many people.”
