A 29-year-old Bournemouth man has been arrested after a man was assaulted in the town centre at the weekend.

The victim was found unconscious with head injuries lying in a road at 9.30am on Sunday.

Officers were told by ambulance personnel that it looked as if the man had been the victim of an assault in Cambridge Road.

The man, 21, was taken to Poole Hospital for treatment to his wounds.

On Sunday afternoon police and forensic officers were combing the area for clues and had taped off a secluded part of the road.

A Dorset police spokesperson told the Echo that there had been no mention of a weapon.

Residents living next door to the sealed-off area said they were shocked to see police outside in the road when they woke up on Sunday morning.

One man said: “I didn't hear anything, but when I woke up there were ambulance and police outside.”

Another resident said: “One of the neighbours said they heard girls screaming about 3am or 4am.

“But I didn't know anything until later.

“We haven't been told too much to be honest.”

White-suited forensic officers were seen throughout the day at the scene with officers stationed outside the cordoned-off flats at the end of the road.

Any witnesses to the incident or anyone who has any information regarding the assault should contact Dorset police on 101 or the confidential Crimestoppers hotline on 0800 555 111, quoting incident number 27/157.
