BRITAIN’S war dead will be honoured at a series of Remembrance services both today and on Sunday.

The commemorations will begin today with a short poppy laying ceremony at Bournemouth’s newest memorial. The memorial at the corner of Wimborne Road and Meadow Court Close in Moordown is a tribute to the crew of a Halifax bomber who crashed and died here in the Second World War.

There will also be a Remembrance Day service at Holdenhurst Church at 11am today, attended by local veterans and dignitaries. In Poole, the Mayor will lead a two minute silence at Poole Civic Centre and there will also be a Remembrance Service at the Lych Gate of St Michael’s Church in Blandford Road, Hamworthy.

Among the many services and commemorative events on Sunday, there will be the traditional gathering of Canadian war veterans at the memorial cross at Mogshade Hill, Bolderwood in the New Forest.

In Christchurch, there will be a wreath-laying service at Purewell Cross War Memorial at 9.45am, a British Legion Parade through the High Street to the Priory Church and a wreath-laying ceremony at the Garden Remembrance followed by a service in the Priory. In the afternoon, wreaths will be laid at the war memorial at St Mark’s Church in Highcliffe.

In Bournemouth, the traditional Remembrance Day parade will start from Exeter Road and end at the War Memorial for the two minute silence and service.

A similar parade will take place at the Poole Park war memorial, where councillors, standard bearers, ex-service personnel and serving Royal Marines will gather to mark the occasion.

In Blandford, the Royal British Legion parade will leave Church Lane at 2.45pm and end at St Paul’s Church, where the Bishop of Sherborne will lead the service. There will also be a Remembrance Parade in Corfe Mullen, starting from Centre Avenue.

Swanage’s parade will start from the seafront in Shore Road at 2.30pm before proceeding to St Mary’s Church in Kings Road and then later to the War Memorial for the laying of wreaths.

And Bovington Tank Museum will host an official service on behalf of Bovington Garrison, which serving soldiers, veterans and their families will attend. The service will take place in the Tamiya Hall, with a wreath laying ceremony and two minute silence afterwards at the Royal Armoured Corps Memorial.
