THERE are crimes that make you very angry, those that frustrate you and those that make you feel plain sad.

Then are those that just make you shake your head and wonder just how low people can stoop.

The scum who walked into a Tesco Express store with a pair of pliers and coolly snipped the chain on the Poppy Appeal tin might conceivably argue that nobody was robbed and nobody got hurt.

No weapons were brandished and nobody ended up frozen with outrage or terror.

I sincerely hope they get the chance to argue that case very soon, because I’ve a feeling that the CCTV footage – and we hope someone gets a copy of it to the Echo sharpish – might just give them the chance to have their day in court.

Their argument, of course, is fatuous, but it’s also an insult to every single person who gave their blood, sweat, tears and even their lives to protect this country.

It’s incredibly sad to think that so many young people whose lives have never been affected by war will gladly buy a poppy at this time of year because of the respect they feel for our servicemen and women.

Yet these two losers can happily stick two fingers up to them – and us – by stealing the proceeds of that respect.
