THE antics of our overpaid and over-sexed Premiership footballers and, more alarmingly, our top rugby union players, have ceased to surprise us.

Nor should we be shocked when we hear that players in the lower leagues of our national game like a drink or two after a victory.

But unlike the stratospheric big earners who can let off steam in the private confines of a luxury coach, the lads from Poole Town share the bus home with the loyal fans who follow them around and offer unstinting support.

These people, usually hard-working and dedicated football fans, give their time up in the hope that one day, they can celebrate glory, even on the smallest level.

So they deserve the utmost respect from the players and reading our story today and trawling through the straight talking from fans on the internet, a minority of players let everyone down.

It’s sad and unnecessary, but the great thing about a club like Poole Town is that it’s run by real people who don’t hide behind a public relations force field.

So the vice-chairman doesn’t need to consult anyone when he responds angrily, offers no defence to his players and promises they will pay out of their own pockets to ferry fans to the next game.

That’s what I call the best way to deal with a situation that won’t happen again.

l ONE team that has certainly done the town proud clinched the title on Monday and have deservedly impressed everyone with their spirit, skill and dedication.

Belated congratulations to Matt, Neil, the riders and everyone who enjoys watching Poole Pirates prove they’re simply the best in the land.
