THE inquest into the death of Bournemouth backpacker Ben Light will be held on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old had been tubing on the south-east Asian river on April 13 and had used a rope swing to launch himself into the water.

But moments after swimming to the side and climbing out, he was heard to say “excuse me” and dropped to the floor, suffering a fatal seizure.

As reported in the Daily Echo shortly after his death, fellow travellers tried to resuscitate Ben at the Nam Xong river in Vang Vieng. He was rush to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ben had been away for a three-month adventure to Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand.

He had spent three months volunteering at a school in Thailand.

He had almost cut his trip short after being robbed, but changed his mind after making three new friends and went with them to Vang Vieng.

His devastated mother, Andrea Loehry, said Ben, who had just passed the test to join MI5, had complained of bad headaches and could have had a tumour.

Ben’s death was the second tragedy to strike the family after Ben’s father died six years ago aged just 52.

Ben, who was described as a popular young man who made friends wherever he went, had a degree in criminology from the University of the West of England.

He played brass instruments in three local bands and also worked as a DJ.

The inquest will be held at the coroner’s court in Southampton on Wednesday.
