Designs are going on show for a Poole first school, which is proposed to expand into a primary.

Heatherlands First School will also go out to consultation on the plans after securing the go-ahead from the borough’s children and young people overview and scrutiny committee.

The plans for the school would allow it to change from its current age range of four to eight, to become a primary school for four to 11-year-olds from September 2013.

“We have received tremendous support from parents and governors for the proposal that Heatherlands becomes a primary school and we will begin statutory consultation on that proposal in September,” said headteacher Sally Burns.

“In the meantime we are keen to involve our parents and the community at this early stage and look forward to sharing the possibilities for the school with them,” she said.

A drop-in event is being held at the Library Road school for parents and neighbours to view the £5m designs.

Representatives from the design team, the school and council officers will be there to answer questions.

It takes place tomorrow, July 12 from 3pm to 7pm and views will be considered before a planning application is submitted in August.

There will be another chance to see the designs at the school throughout this and parents will have the opportunity to question council officers at the fun afternoon on Friday, July 15.

“Although we know there is much local support for Heatherlands to become a primary school, the consultation will include the views of residents living nearby to make sure we pick up any local concerns,” said Cllr Sandra Moore, committee chairman.

Consultation on the primary school proposal will start in September, with the final decision being taken in February 2012.

If the plans are approved, construction would start in the 2012 summer term.
